Dovecot Studios presents an exciting opportunity for a café operator within our unique heritage building in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town.

Dovecot is a world-renowned tapestry studio and a landmark centre for contemporary art, craft and design. Established in 1912, Dovecot continues a century-long heritage of collaboration with international artists to make exceptional handwoven tapestries and gun-tufted rugs. Alongside the tapestry studio, Dovecot runs an exciting public programme of exhibitions and events, with the Dovecot Shop and Dovecot Café adding to our profile as a tourist and design destination.

The café is a valuable resource for Dovecot, offering visitors good food and drink in a welcoming, stylish and relaxed atmosphere. The café complements, and extends, Dovecot’s exhibition and retail spaces, adding to a visitor’s experience.

Dovecot also hosts private hire events throughout the year. These have included meetings, conferences, drinks receptions, dinners, and weddings. Dovecot currently works with a list of four caterers (including the current café operator). We are keen to work with a café operator with an enthusiasm for events business, and who is well placed to grow this part of the operation. There is currently an expectation the café operator caters all of the daily meetings and conferences. We are open to hearing food and drink-led and other event ideas generated by the operator.

Dovecot’s visitor-base is varied: including, a high rate of repeat visitors to our exhibitions, events, shop and café, increasing numbers of tourists, traffic from local businesses including University of Edinburgh staff and students, as well as venue hire clients.  Annually we welcome over 50,000 visitors, and have seen a surge in exhibition visitor figures in recent years. Our visitors come to be inspired and identify visual arts as an important part of their lives.

All the activities at Dovecot support the development of our internationally renowned tapestry studio. Dovecot aims to inspire our visitors and to build more diverse audiences, to achieve our charitable mission to support and promote the art of Scottish tapestry weaving.
