WHAT'S ON THIS SUMMER AT DOVECOT

Chris Ofili: The Caged Bird's Song

28 June – 5 October 2024

Dovecot Studios' major tapestry with Chris Ofili will return to Scotland in Summer 2024. The Caged Bird’s Song, commissioned by The Clothworkers’ Company, will be shown in the context of the tapestry studio where the work was created.

Experience how the colour, myths and magic of Ofili’s watercolour design are transformed into a large format tapestry that took Dovecot’s master weavers over three years to create. The exhibition will form part of the Edinburgh Festival 2024.

Pauline Caulfield Textiles

8 March – 20 July 2024

Pauline Caulfield is a textile artist whose large-scale screen-printed panels architectural interventions and ecclesiastical works move gracefully between hard-edged abstraction and illusion. Featuring over 20 large pieces ranging from fans, chasubles and fabric panels, this display illuminates Caulfield’s versatile yet distinctive work. More recently she has explored the use of freehand techniques including using combs and rollers and the dabbing of pigment dyes to achieve spectacular textural and visual effects.

Tania Kovats: SEAMARKS

27 July - 2 November 2024

Tania Kovats’ ongoing series ‘SEAMARKS’, multiple seascapes captured in brushstrokes, drawings and ceramic, is being expanded with the creation of a new tapestry by Dovecot Studios. Kovats presents the passing of time through the broken surface of the sea, the elemental rhythms of the moon and the meditative qualities of weaving and drawing.

Kovats repetitive marks capture the energy and flicker of water in this converted Victorian bath house. As the marks get smaller and closer towards the horizon they invoke a sense of infinity, exploring how art can speak to our critical climate emergency.
