Dovecot Colour & Form

Dovecot exists to sustain the future of tapestry weaving in Scotland. Since 1912, Dovecot has trained generations of weavers who have helped make Edinburgh a centre of excellence for tapestry. This display across the café, stairwell, and shop presents artworks woven by our most recent apprentices, all of which showcase Dovecot’s distinctive approach to colour and form. 

Dovecot Tapestry Studio represents an exceptional repository of weaving knowledge and intangible cultural heritage dating back to the founders of the British Arts and Crafts movement. Our Master Weavers train apprentices in skills that are consistent with William Morris’ vision for tapestry and in doing so, keep this historic craft alive and vibrant. Tapestry offers a collaborative artform for world-class contemporary artists to create ground-breaking works of art, which are accessible to the wider public. 

Studying a craft requires time and it takes up to five years to become a Dovecot Weaver. Tapestry is no longer taught in UK further or higher education. It is therefore more important than ever for Dovecot to cultivate support for future Apprenticeships.
