Dovecot aims to make access to the Gallery and Tapestry Studio as engaging and welcoming to the widest possible public. There are a range of facilities to help you see the collection of tapestries and rugs, visit exhibitions and come to events.
Gallery access and assistance
The Gallery is currently developing its programme of events to include those visitors who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, as well as offering handling sessions and audio-descriptive tours for visitors who are blind and partially sighted. The Dovecot building on Infirmary Street is fully accessible with lifts, disabled toilets and staff on hand to assist. Please do get in touch before your visit, to let us know how we can help by calling 0131 550 3660 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please see our Find Us page, for information on local transport. If you require additional support in getting to Dovecot, give us a call on 0131 550 3660 and we shall do our best to put you in touch with local guides.
Please be aware there are no badge-holder parking spaces on Infirmary Street. There are disabled parking bays located nearby at the West end of Chambers Street by the National Museum of Scotland. Disabled parking bays are marked sky blue on the Edinburgh City Council website.
One entrance at the front of the Dovecot building on the right has level access. The double doors are often shut and do not open automatically, so either knock on the glass for assistance or ring the top left buzzer on the metal panel to the right of this door.
Wheelchair access and seating
The building is fully wheelchair accessible, and the lift which has access to all floors can accommodate a powered electric wheelchair. There are folding chairs available in the Gallery and can be requested from staff at front desk.
There are disabled toilets on the ground, first and third floors by the Gallery, Ladies Baths event space and Tapestry Studio Viewing Balcony.
How to book for events
Most of our exhibition events are free to access and spaces can be booked via Eventbrite. If you would prefer to call us or drop us an email, we can process the booking on your behalf. Entrance to the Gallery and Tapestry Studio Viewing Balcony is free.

Audio-descriptive tours and handling sessions
Dovecot works with independent organisations such as Artlink, and freelance tour guides, to deliver audio-descriptive tours of the exhibitions and handling sessions for blind and visually impaired visitors. Large print exhibition labels and information is available in the Gallery spaces. For more information check out the What’s On page.
Some Dovecot events might offer BSL interpretation, but it is always best to check our What’s On page to be sure. If there are any upcoming events that you would like to see interpreted or if you lip read, then please do get in touch and we will do our best to facilitate this or make adjustments to help. Subtitles are included in video displays in the Gallery.
There is no induction loop currently positioned at front desk. Hearing loops (with T loop option) are provided for exhibition events for those with a hearing impairment. If you require to use the loop, please do let us know in advance.
Dovecot can arrange early access to exhibitions for visitors, including groups with mental health issues, children with autism and their families or carers, and those with dementia or Alzheimer’s who would prefer a private view of the Gallery spaces. Please contact us in good time, as we will have to make operational arrangements in order to facilitate this out of hours.
If you represent a specific interest or access group, then we would like to hear from you. Our staff can provide a welcome and tour of the current exhibition. Dependent on availability, a workshop or access to the Tapestry Studio can also be arranged out with the Viewing Balcony opening hours.
Please call 0131 550 3660 or email email@example.com for general access queries.
