Dovecot Studios have been awarded Open Project Funding from Creative Scotland to create a major new tapestry influenced by Archie Brennan, a key figure in international tapestry.

Brennan started his weaving career at Dovecot Studios as an apprentice, and later became director of the Studios. Pushing the boundaries of the medium, he developed a unique approach to weaving and tapestry design which is continued by Dovecot weavers today.

Celia Joicey, director of Dovecot Studios commented: “Scottish artist Archie Brennan is one of the world’s most influential tapestry weavers. Trained by Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh from 1947, his innovative approach to tapestry design and weaving technique has won international acclaim for Scotland. This project will not only reclaim Brennan as an important Pop artist and Scottish success story, it will also provide the opportunity to pass his skills to a new generation of weavers.”
