With instruction from Master Weaver Jonathan Cleaver and Rug Tufter Dennis Reinmüller, Kristi Vana has now completed her training and has attained the status of Rug Tufter.
Beginning with a sample piece exploring the skill of line drawing with a rug tufting gun in early 2015, she progressed to her own creative project titled Vend – a portrait piece depicting her brother – experimenting with different types of wool and colour mixing. Her first artist collaboration was towards the end of 2015, working alongside Cleaver and Reinmüller, with Linder on the Diagrams of Love: Marriage of Eyes rug for British Art Show 8. The rug also features as part of the Children of the Mantic Stain ballet performance at Dovecot on Wednesday 30 March. Vana completed her first solo tufting project with design studio Timorous Beasties and curator Ben Divall, in the creation of a hearth rug for a Smoking Room. The commissioned rug featured in Dovecot Gallery’s Selected 2015 + Dovecot Selects exhibition in late 2015 and found its home in the Scottish Borders with its new owner the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry in early 2016.
Vana continues with ongoing rug projects this year, including the Weavers rug with artist Adrian Wiszniewski and the Kurt Jackson’s Grangemouth. To view some of Vana and her fellow tufter’s recent rug projects, you can visit Dovecot’s Viewing Balcony on Thursday and Friday 12-3pm and Saturday 10.30am-5.30pm where you can see the Tuft Loving display.
