Join Dovecot Tapestry Studio at this special event to meet the Dovecot weaving team and discuss their approach to colour and expression in fine art.
Weavers Rudi Richardson, Louise Trotter and Ben Hymers will be joined by curator Kate Grenyer in a demonstration and discussion of how the Tapestry Studio’s recent artworks have been commissioned and created. The weavers will discuss their lives in tapestry, from apprenticeships and art college to the artists they have collaborated with, and, in a guided tour of the Daughters of Penelope exhibition, they will discuss the inspiration they take from the programme of exhibitions at Dovecot that aim to increase understanding and appreciation of art, craft and design.

The event starts at 2pm with tea and coffee plus a tapestry weaving demonstration in the Dovecot South Gallery. The talk follows at 2.30pm and lasts for approximately 90 minutes including an opportunity to ask questions. The event ends with a tour of the Daughters of Penelope exhibition, when the weavers and curator will highlight particular works relating to Dovecot’s practice.

Speakers:
Rudi Richardson was introduced to tapestry through studying Navajo weaving in the 1970s. He has since worked with the San Francisco Tapestry Workshop, including weaving the banners for Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party (1978), with San Francisco artist Mark Adams, and with West Dean Tapestry Studio. He joined Dovecot in 2014.
Louise Trotter studied Constructed Textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, before working as a weaver at West Dean Tapestry Studio and joining Dovecot Studio in 2015. She was one of the Dovecot weavers on The Caged Bird’s Song, the Dovecot tapestry with Chris Ofili for The Clothworkers’ Company.
Ben Hymers is a Dovecot Apprentice Tapestry Weaver. He joined the Studio in 2014 and will complete his apprenticeship to become Dovecot Junior Weaver this year. Originally from Leeds, he has an MA (Hons) History of Art from the University of Edinburgh and is a part-time close-up magician.
Kate Grenyer is Exhibitions Curator at Dovecot, where her most recent exhibitions include The Weaver’s Apprentice and Daughters of Penelope. She joined Dovecot in 2013 having previously worked as an independent curator and writer, as well as in gallery education, outreach, art handling and installation at a number of arts and heritage organisations.
