Meet Annette Carruthers, expert on the history of the Arts & Crafts Movement in Scotland and co-author of a new book on the renowned architect and designer Ernest Gimson (1864–1919).
This illustrated talk analyses Gimson’s designs for buildings, furniture, metalwork, plaster decoration, and embroidery, as well as his significance within the history of Arts and Crafts. Gimson established his workshops deep in the country in the English Cotswolds, but he had many links with Scottish Arts & Crafts architects and designers, including Robert Lorimer, Robert Weir Schultz, and Francis Troup. Gimson also collaborated with May Morris on several important projects.
This talk is an opportunity to discover how the style and quality of work by Gimson and his contemporaries still speaks directly to those exploring the role of craft in the modern world.

Annette Carruthers is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews and an expert on the Arts and Crafts Movement, as well as the history of British design and decorative arts of the 19th and early 20th centuries. She is the co-author of Ernest Gimson Arts & Crafts Designer and Architect and author of The Arts and Crafts Movement in Scotland: A History.
