• Tania Kovats: Artist Talk

Join celebrated artist Tania Kovats for a special preview night of Dovecot's latest balcony exhibition, Tania Kovats: SEAMARKS, as she unveils her new tapestry.

British artist Tania Kovats makes drawings, sculpture, installations and large-scale time-based projects to explore our experience and understanding of landscape. She is particularly drawn to water, both oceans (her work, All the Seas, comprised hundreds of flasks of water collected from all the world’s oceans) and rivers (her 2010 Jupiter Artland commission features 100 specimens of water from 100 different rivers around the British Isles). The SEAMARK tapestry is her first tapestry and will form part of her first exhibition in Edinburgh in a decade. The exhibition will form part of the Edinburgh Art Festival and Fringe Festival.

Tania Kovats will talk about her practice and working in a new medium with Fiona Bradley, Director of Fruitmarket who curated Kovats’ first solo exhibition ‘Oceans’ in Scotland in 2014. The event will include exclusive access to the Dovecot Tapestry Studio Viewing Balcony after hours with a welcome drink on arrival.

Tania Kovats’ ongoing series SEAMARKS, multiple seascapes captured in brushstrokes, drawings and ceramic, is being expanded with the creation of a new tapestry by Dovecot Studios. Kovats presents the passing of time through the broken surface of the sea, the elemental rhythms of the moon and the meditative qualities of weaving and drawing. As the marks get smaller and closer towards the horizon they invoke a sense of infinity, exploring how art can speak to our critical climate emergency.

The artist has been collaborating closely with Dovecot’s Master Weavers since January to create and interpret her tapestry design. Hand-woven by four weavers, the work has taken four months to complete and measures 1.5 metres square. The tapestry’s incredible depth and texture has been achieved through the gradation of tone towards the light of the horizon and by combining the properties of different yarns.

Every ticket sold supports the work of The Dovecot Foundation to advance visual art, craft and design in all its forms.
