Clare Woods is a sculptor-turned-painter best known for large-scale, oil on aluminium works that strike a balance between observation and abstraction.  She often begins with photographs, reworking them into images that feel transformed but still reminiscent of an object.

Born in Southampton in 1972, Woods received a BA in Fine Art Sculpture from Bath School of Art in 1994 and an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmith’s College in 1999. Woods has exhibited widely in Britain and internationally, including in Copenhagen, Berlin, Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Athens, Madrid, Prague, and Art Basel in Switzerland. Her work can also be found in numerous public collections. Clare was elected as a Royal Academician in 2022.

In 2016, Woods published Strange Meetings, a monograph covering 25 years of her practice. In 2024, she followed this with As I Please, examining paintings and works on paper from the previous ten years.
