• Douglas Grierson

Douglas Grierson (1946-2019) joined Dovecot in 1961 and was the first to serve a five year apprenticeship, instead of the traditional seven year duration of training. As an apprentice, he attended evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art, as well as a day release class for two years, before becoming a Master Weaver. Douglas was a vital member of the weaving team for fifty years, as Studio Manager between 1993 and 2000 and Head Weaver from 2000 until his retirement in 2011. He worked on many important projects during this time, including Joyce Conwy Evans’ Spirit of Dance (1962), Eduardo Paolozzi’s Whitworth tapestry (1967-8), Frank Stella’s Had Gaya tapestries (1985-6), Alan Davie’s To A Celtic Spirit (2002) and Patrick Caulfield’s Pause on the Landing (2005).
