Detail, Victoria Crowe, Twilight, Venice 2019, Dovecot Studios
With a career spanning over 50 years, artist Victoria Crowe is well-known for her thoughtful and layered landscape and portrait paintings. Marking a significant point in her career, Dovecot Studios are working with Crowe to create a new tapestry inspired by a detail from her painting, Twilight, Venice 2014.
Like many of Crowe’s Venetian paintings, Twilight, Venice features rich colours of a jewel-like quality that reflect the intangible preciousness of the city. Engaging with the textural complexity of the painting, Dovecot Master Weavers David Cochrane and Naomi Robertson, and Dovecot weaver Rudi Richardson are creating a sumptuous interpretation of the work that captures the tones and shades of twilight in a new way.
Dovecot have a long-standing creative relationship with Crowe, which began in 2007 with the tapestry Two Views commissioned by the Duke of Buccleuch. Dovecot weavers and the artist have worked on significant projects including an iconic 40-metre tapestry for the Leathersellers’ Hall, London, and Large Tree Group, which was woven entirely with un-dyed wool.
Twilight, Venice tapestry is due to be completed in September 2019. For enquires or further information please contact Susan Mc Ateer, Marketing and Sales Manager firstname.lastname@example.org
