Scottish artist Craigie Aitchison CBE RA RSA (1926-2009) was well known for his paintings depicting landscapes, portraits, and crucifixion scenes in a distinctive Mediterranean palette.
In 2003, Aitchison was invited to Dovecot Studios to discuss potential collaborations. Walking through the Studios, the artist recalled a seat cover woven by Dovecot weavers in his mother’s house in Edinburgh. The tapestry seat cover was a depiction of a Cecil Beaton image of a flower. Inspired by this connection, the artist created a painting of the seat cover design, which was then woven by Master Weaver Naomi Robertson as Dovecot Tapestry Still Life.
