In 2025, Dovecot invited acclaimed artist David Remfry MBE RA to bring his lyrical artistic vision to Dovecot Studios by commissioning his first-ever tapestry. Depicting the green chandeliers of New York City’s Soho House against an obscured background, the tapestry is reminiscent of metropolitan decadence at the turn of the 20th century. Created after Remfry’s oil painting, Chandelirium (2018), the tapestry took two weavers four months to create.
The tapestry reveals an intuitive sense of colour and contrast. The Dovecot Weavers expertly blended neutrals and greys to create a sense of perpetual depth. In stark contrast, six chandeliers in luminescent shades of yellow and green spring from the darkness to illuminate the lower half of the composition. Remfry’s paintings are, in one sense, a celebration of the physical qualities of paint: its drips, texture, and layers - all of which are stunningly recreated in woven form.
Chandelirium is currently on display in the exhibition David Remfry: In Residence on the Dovecot Viewing Balcony, 21 February - 13 June 2026.
