Garry Fabian Miller’s The Ruby Embers is one in a series of ‘hearth rugs’ first created and shown in the exhibition Dwelling at Dovecot in 2015. One of the key decisions with this rug, was how to interpret the rich blackness in Fabian Miller’s photographic works. Unusually, rather than blending a series of black wools for the main body of the rug, a single shade of black was carefully selected for its warmth and depth. This shade of black was then blended with a small amount of purple at the periphery of the central circle to create an effect of faded light.
The Ruby Embers was shown at Collect: The International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects in 2018, presented by the Crafts Council at London’s Saatchi Gallery. This is as part of ‘WORKING WITH…’, Oxford Ceramics Gallery Stand, curated in collaboration with Amanda Game.
