Victoria Crowe: Richer Twilight, Venice

This tapestry is a meditation on the Byzantine palette and distinctive skyline of the city of Venice, which evokes artistic comparison with Edinburgh. It is currently on display as part of Shifting Surfaces.

Richer Twilight, Venice was commissioned by Dovecot to celebrate the 50-year artistic career of Victoria Crowe. Inspired by a detail from her painting, Twilight, Venice, 2014, the Dovecot weavers have engaged with the textural complexity of the painting to create a sumptuous interpretation that captures the fleeting subtleties of twilight. The tapestry highlights the skill of Dovecot weavers in translating painterly detail and complex colour tonality, while simultaneously celebrating artistic collaboration between artist and weavers.
