• A Brief History of Scottish Shops

As our shopping habits continue to change, we encounter the convenience of online shopping, but we sacrifice the retail therapy experience!

Join Neil Gregory of Historic Environment Scotland to see some of finest examples of forward-thinking retail architecture and design in Scotland; from the grandeur of Jenner’s to the modernity of Binns, along with a few much loved and forgotten favourites.

The drawings and photographs in the HES archive provide rich evidence of the fashionable goods, electric lights, escalators and cafes within shops that provided an escape from the everyday in Scottish towns and cities. With the high street currently under threat, this is a chance to glimpse into the past to see how these shops looked in their heyday.

This talk accompanies the Dovecot Balcony Display The Scottish Department Store.
