Edward Bawden Abydos Tapestries at Morley College
In 1930, the refreshment room murals at Morley College, South London’s legendary home of adult education, were opened amid international press acclaim. Edward Bawden was one of the young artists involved, and 25 years after his death, the college marks its 125th anniversary in Morley College’s own gallery with an exhibition focused on Bawden’s genius at telling stories in pictures. The Edward Bawden Dovecot Studios tapestries; Abydos (Man with Ox) and Abydos (Doves and Dovecots) both woven in 2011 will form part of this exhibition Edward Bawden Storyteller at Morley Gallery between 4–26 November at Morley College.
David Weir, Director of Dovecot Tapestry Studios explores the nature of tapestry collaboration between artist and artist weaver, charting the ‘alchemy’ woven into the Studios’ continuing collaborations with artists and designers today.
