May Morris, daughter of Jane and William Morris, grew up in a rich artistic environment, surrounded by beautiful things of her parent’s making – including their clothes. In this talk, Dr Robyne Calvert discusses Artistic Dress, and the style through which many Victorian artists expressed their affinity with creative communities.
In addition to the wonderful dresses, bodices, and jewellery on display in Dovecot’s exhibition, May Morris: Art & Life, Dr Calvert will explore the dress of the Pre-Raphaelites, artists of the Arts & Crafts and Aestheticism movements, and finally from Morris’ contemporaries in Scotland, notably those coming out of the Glasgow School of Art.

About Dr Robyne Calvert
Dr Robyne Calvert is a Cultural Historian with expertise on the history of art, architecture and design in Britain. As Mackintosh Research Fellow at Glasgow School of Art, she is charged with fostering innovative research projects arising from the Mackintosh Building restoration project, and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Glasgow, where she teaches and supervises students on the MLitt programme in Dress and Textile History.
