• Collecting Scottish Women Artists at the Fleming Collection
    Phil Wilkinson

Join Fleming Collection Director James Knox for a fascinating insight into the challenges and triumphs of acquiring work by Scottish women artists.

James will relate how – from its founding in the 1960s – the Fleming Collection had the foresight to buy key works by Joan Eardley, Anne Redpath and Elizabeth Blackadder as well as historical rarities. This has been the springboard for his own focussed campaign, which since 2017 has added over 25 works by women artists to the collection.

These range from historical rarities – including Phoebe Anna Traquair – to emerging greats like Maud Sulter and stars of the future such as Sekai Machache. James will regale us with the highs and lows of the chase – nail-biting auctions, thrilling discoveries, tense negotiations and the occasional one that got away – with the added benefit that all the works in question can be seen in Dovecot’s exhibition Scottish Women Artists.

  • Exhibition entry from 4:30 pm
  • Talk starts at 5:30 pm
