• Online Talk: Scottish Women Artists at the Fleming Collection
    Phil Wilkinson

Director James Knox will give the inside story on the Fleming Collection’s remarkable acquisition strategy since 2016. He will set the scene with the early history of the collection – long deemed the finest of Scottish art outside public institutions – with its first purchases in 1968 of Colourist masterpieces and historical rarities. He will go on to explain how the current strategy has filled key gaps but also developed new areas of collecting, such as a remarkable group of pioneer artists who anticipated the climate crisis.

His story will relate the highs and lows of the chase, often requiring lightning decisions, nail-biting bids and thrilling discoveries. He will touch on the practicalities of buying as well as shine light on the invaluable work of specialist auctioneers and dealers. Works featured will range from a portrait commissioned for Charles I’s 1633 Edinburgh coronation to remarkable photographs of the Calais Jungle and an abstract painting made from the mud of an East Lothian saltmarsh. And then there are the ones that got away… Don’t miss what promises to be an intriguing and uplifting talk to cheer up January.
