    Wonder Women

Throughout the twentieth century, Dovecot and The Scottish Gallery Edinburgh have represented exceptional women artists and created routes to market for their work. This display presents a new collaboration between Dovecot and contemporary Scottish artist Victoria Crowe OBE. The tufted rug is an interpretation of one of a series of paintings inspired by Crowe’s recent RSA/Pier Arts Centre Residency on Orkney. Crowe has been represented by The Scottish Gallery for over 50 years and has engaged in a number of projects with Dovecot. This latest rug is shown in the context of historic work by fellow significant Scottish artists Anne Redpath, Wilhelmina Barns Graham, Joan Eardley and Pat Douthwaite.

These artists are now highly collectable, yet, in their lifetime, many women artists experienced fewer opportunities to exhibit their work on a commercial or public platform compared to their male peers. This display coincides with a new exhibition at The Scottish Gallery which provides an important contemporary opportunity to acquire work and address the historic imbalance in both public and private collections.

This display coincides with WONDER WOMEN at The Scottish Gallery from 27th July to 26th August 2023, which provides an important contemporary opportunity to acquire work and address the historic imbalance in both public and private collections. Please see The Scottish Gallery's website for their full programme.

This display is located on the Tapestry Studio Viewing Balcony, which is open to the public Monday to Friday 12pm – 3pm and 10am – 5pm at the weekend.
