Tapestries + Rugs
Jonathan Cleaver graduated with a BA (Hons) Tapestry from Edinburgh College of Art and also holds an MLitt in Art History: Dress & Textile Histories from the University of Glasgow. He worked in related textile fields, including conservation at Burleigh House, before joining Dovecot Tapestry Studio as a Weaver in 2008 and gaining Master Weaver status in 2015. Cleaver worked on a range of scales – from large tapestries to smaller works, such as his collaboration with David Poston on a number of jewellery pieces in 2010, while he also specialised in gun tufting Dovecot rugs. He is particularly interested in tapestries that reference historic textile structures and designs, and in 2017 left Dovecot to focus his time on the completion of an AHRC-funded PhD at the University of Glasgow on the history of carpet design.
